In der erotischen Photographie steht ein Künstler, so er sich nicht als ein Provokateur und Tabubrecher definiert, vor einer komplizierten Gratwanderung. Zum einen existiert der ungebrochene Trend einer stetigen Sexualisierung vieler Teile des öffentlichen Lebens und zum anderen verlangt genau diese Gesellschaft von ihren Mitgliedern ein fast unsinnlich zu nennendes, moralisiertes und sexuell korrektes Verhalten. Diesen Spagat zwischen dem unstillbaren Verlangen nach Sexualität - und dem eben noch tolerierten Maß an Erotik führt Colin Talcroft mit kreativer Souveränität und handwerklicher Meisterschaft aus und reizt den Betrachter, ohne reißerisch zu sein. Er demonstriert: Nicht moralische Zensur und auch nicht ein Tabu-Bruch, sondern die menschliche Phantasie erschafft Erotik.

I am a self-taught photographer. I began making pictures in grade school with a box camera. I became interested in pinhole photography in high school (a pursuit I have recently returned to). I began nude photography in 1995. I compose carefully in the camera. I tend to see the subject as a flat, abstract composition within the rectangle of the film. This way of seeing was probably influenced by an early interest in the work o impressionist and post-impressionists painters.
Ironically, the compositional traits that attracted me to these painters may be traceable in large part to the influence of photography on late 19th century painting, suggesting that my approach to composition has deeper roots. My nude work has been an extension of this tendency, whatever its source. I approach nude photography as I do any other. I look for compelling shapes when I look at nude women. Nude photography has an added dimension, however. It always entails the possibility of an emotional leap from the pleasure afforded by contemplating the formal beauty of abstract composition to the more visceral pleasures of sex suggested by contemplating the body. I believe my work is most successful when it walks a very fine line between the two, a line that allows the viewer to move back and forth between them.
